Selling as a Rule Is Uncomfortable – But Shaking It Off Leads to Success
Selling often feels awkward at first, but those who push through the discomfort ultimately find success.
Selling is uncomfortable. Most people hate it at first—the pressure, the fear of rejection, and the awkwardness of asking for the sale can make anyone feel uneasy. But here’s the truth: those who learn to shake it off and keep going are the ones who become successful. After 41 years of selling across industries—from contracting to automotive, alarms, and medical—I’ve seen it all, and I know firsthand that the key to success is persistence.
Why Does Selling Feel Uncomfortable?
At its core, selling involves persuading someone to see the value in what you offer, often in exchange for their money. That alone can feel intimidating. Add the potential for rejection, and it’s easy to see why many people dread it.
The discomfort usually stems from the fear of failure. Rejection feels personal, and most people would rather avoid it. But in sales, rejection is inevitable—and it’s not a reflection of your worth or your product.
Belief in What You Are Selling Makes All the Difference
One of the most important factors in overcoming the discomfort of selling is belief. When you truly believe that your product or service is valuable and solves an important issue, rejection becomes easier to handle. It’s not about them rejecting the value of what you offer—they’re saying no to you at that moment.
And that’s actually a good thing, because you can improve. You can adjust your approach, refine your pitch, and try again. But when you know in your heart that your product or service offers real solutions, it’s much easier to shake off the rejection and keep going.
When your belief in what you’re selling is rock solid, it reframes every “no.” You stop taking it personally and start seeing it as an opportunity to improve how you communicate that value.
What Sets Successful Salespeople Apart?
Successful salespeople don’t let discomfort hold them back. They feel the fear but move forward anyway. It’s not that they’re immune to rejection or awkward moments; they’ve simply learned to shake it off and keep going.
Having sold in the contracting, auto, alarm, and medical industries for roughly 10 years each, I’ve learned that each field brings its own unique challenges. But one thing remains consistent: the people who push through the discomfort and keep refining their approach are the ones who succeed. After years of honing my craft, I can confidently say that belief and persistence are the keys to sales success.
